HOW TO: Back Up Your Social Media Presence Before the Ball Drops
Think of it as stockpiling food and building a fallout shelter for the 21st century. We have a ton of information, photos and memories scattered around the web that we would be loathe to lose, and while it's unlikely that the entire Internet is going to come crashing down in the next week or so, it still might be wise to put some of that stuff in an iron box for safe keeping.
Read on, and Christina Warren and I will show you how to
---------------
Back Up Your Facebook
---------------
We're coming pretty close to living our lives on Facebook it's our photo album, diary and mailbox, all in one so why leave all that info up to the whims of the all-mighty servers? This October, the social network got hip to data portability after it started allowing users to download their profiles photos, statues, updates, videos and all.
The process is really too simple to forgo. Here's how you can stow away your social life for safekeeping: 1). Go to Account Settings, 2). Click on "Download Your Information" and allow Facebook to download your info, 3). Wait for an e-mail that will let you know your info is ready (it takes a while, what with all the stuff you probably have on Facebook), 4). Go through the security test that allows you to download your info (kudos on that one, Facebook), and, voila, your profile is ported to your desktop in a nifty folder. Do this before you go through with that New Year's resolution to make your profile less scandalous you know, for when you're old and gray and full of sleep and nodding by the fire.
---------------
Back Up Your Tweets
---------------
Yes, the Library of Congress is now hoarding tweets, but that doesn't do much for the casual user looking to keep a log of his own mundane musings, now does it?
Thankfully, you're got some options. There's TweetStream, which lets you back up your data as well as mine it for information and statistics. (Be warned, this service takes a looooong time to gather your info).
And if TweetStream doesn't strike your fancy, TweetScan, a site we covered back in 2009, will track your data back to 2007, and, using OAuth, will even grab your timeline, tweets from friends and direct messages.
Pinboard, a paid, Delicious-like (RIP) tool, also lets you store your tweets you can also back up or archive tweets from other usernames or from hashtags, as well as add favorites from a username and turn links embedded in tweets into bookmarks.
---------------
Back Up Your Blog
---------------
After Tumblr's epic outage the other week, we showed you all how to back up your blogs. Well, we're just going to reiterate that right now, along with some solutions for WordPress as well. Remember how you felt when your mom threw away all your old journals, crammed to the margins with angsty poetry? Well, that's not a feeling one would like to replicate later in life (unless it was relief in which case, disregard).
---------------
Tumblr
---------------
Last year, Tumblr launched a backup app that allows users to save their blogs so that they can be viewed on any computer, burned to a CD or hosted as an archive of static HTML files. The app is super easy to use: Simply download, enter your Tumblr sign-in info and save your blog to your desktop (it looks like the below screenshot). You can launch the app and backup more info every time you post as well.
Note, this app is only for Mac OS X (10.5 or higher), but there are other options for those who use different operating systems.
---------------
WordPress
---------------
If your blog or website uses WordPress, grabbing a backup file of all your posts, pages and comments is easy. In the WordPress dashboard, just go to Tools, Export and choose what types of posts you want to export.
If you want a backup of your entire WordPress database, the excellent WP-DB-Backup plugin can make scheduled database backups for your WordPress site at intervals you choose and even e-mail you the backup file.
---------------
Back Up Your Photos
---------------
If you're like millions of Internet users, you probably upload most of your photos to a photo-sharing site like Flickr or Facebook. While you're backing up your blog entries, tweets and Facebook messages, it might be a good idea to go ahead and archive all of your photos, too. If nothing else, this is a great way to destroy the evidence from that sorority beer bong tournament in college.
Flickr is a great service and in terms of reliability, it's consistently solid. What's less consistent is the whims of its parent company, Yahoo. If the Delicious debacle has taught us anything, it's that Yahoo isn't afraid to sell off or shut down a service with millions of daily users.
Lots of apps and tools let you back up your Flickr photo stream, but a quick, fuss-free way to unload years of photo uploads is the Adobe Air app Flump. The app works on Mac, Windows and Linux and downloads a copy of each photo in your stream to a folder of your choice.
Be aware that while this will grab each and every photo, tags, titles and photo sets are not preserved. There a few other alternatives if you're willing to invest more time in the process, but Flump gets the job done.

The Santa Chronicles
You probably don't give Santa a second look when you see him in a department store or on a street corner every December but maybe you should.
SANTA COPS
By December 2001, Mafia fugitive Francesco Farina had been on the run from Sicilian police for more than five years. Holed up in what he thought was a great hideout -a flat in downtown Catania- Farina was able to look out his window and see whether the cops were closing in on him. But all he saw were the regular assortment of Christmas shoppers, schoolchildren, and a Santa Claus ho-ho-hoing on the street corner. A few days before Christmas, thinking that the coast was clear, Farina decided to go out on the town. Bad idea: the guy in the red suit wasn't Santa after all. A succession of surveillance cops dressed as Santa had kept their eyes on Farina, who ended up spending Christmas in jail.
SANTA'S FISTS OF FURY
An unidentified Santa was cruising down a LeHigh Acres, Florida street in his convertible when he was approached by 20-year-old Jonathan Danzey, who asked Santa for a present. Informed there was nothing for him in Santa';s sack, Danzey got angry. Words were exchanged, Santa got out of the car, and Danzey tried to punch him. According to Katherine Phillips, who witnessed the altercation, "Santa Claus whipped his butt." He ripped Danzey's shirt, knocked him to the ground, then drove away. The cops soon arrived and arrested Danzey on drunk and disorderly charges. "He won, " Danzey conceded, "but he was stronger and more soberer."
SANTAS ON THE RUN
One of the oddest sights in the history of sports took place in Newtown, Wales, in December 2002. More than 1,000 runners -both male and female- participated in a four-mile race for charity all dressed in full Santa Claus garb: black boots, red pants, red coat, and a big white beard. Said one of the runners: "It's a lot easier to run in a Santa suit than to try to hold a normal conversation in one."
SANTA PROTESTORS
What if Santa were banned from Christmas? That's what they tried to do in the small town of Kensington, Maryland in 2001. Some of the townspeople complained that it made them feel uncomfortable having a "religious figure" participate in the annual tree-lighting ceremony, so the town fathers decided to ask Santa to stay home. Unfortunately, not everyone in town agreed with the decision. Result: 50 Santas showed up and marched on City Hall. Pro- and anti-Santa factions clashed; one Santa was arrested.
SANTA MELTDOWN
Shortly before Christmas in 1999, Kelley Fornatoro placed her 19-month-old son next to Santa for a holiday portrait in a Woodland Hills, California shopping mall. The baby immediately started crying. So Fornatoro suggested that Santa put his arm around the boy to calm him down. That's when Santa had a fit of his own. "I will not imprison your child!" he yelled at her. "Was it worth it for you to torture your child for a picture? You must be an evil person." As Fornatoro retrieved her baby, she said she'd be filing a formal complaint. "You can complain about me if you want, but I am Santa Claus. I am the best person in the world!" Then he got really mad. While parents rushed to cover their shocked children's eyes, Santa began undressing. He took off his hat, beard, wig, coat, and belt, and was down to his red, baggy pants and a tank top when security guards escorted him out of the building.
THE SANTA
In a quest to find Great Britain's ultimate Santa, organizers at Guinness World Records sponsored the first-ever "Santathon" in December 2001. The event included a field of eight top contenders donned in full beards, red suits, and black boots. Competitive events included sack-hauling, pie eating, chimney climbing, stocking filling, and ho-ho-hoing. First prize was awarded to David Broughton-Davis, 43, from Croydon, a professional department store Santa. "I'm not very proud to admit that my best event was eating three large mince pies," Broughton-David lamented after being awarded the Golden Boots trophy. "I just wish that event hadn't taken place before the chimney climb. It was hard on the stomach."

5 Ways You Can Block A Facebook Stalker
-JB
-----------------------
Facebook is a great platform for networking. You can reconnect with old friends from school or stay in touch with family and friends who live far away. Facebook makes it easy to find and get in touch with people. However, this feature can haunt you when someone you wish you had never met won't stop messaging and harassing you.
If your stalker's prime route of contact is through Facebook, there are several things you can do to block that Facebook stalker and make it difficult for them to contact you. This article will guide you through the options you have. The two final steps can also help to never attract a stalker in the first place.
If the Facebook stalker is or was on your friend list, unfriending them is not enough. Anyone not your friend on Facebook can still search and find your profile and see everything that you share with everyone. The only way to exclude that person, especially if you have mutual friends on Facebook, is to block them.
There are three different routes through which you can block people.
1. Via Your Block Lists
You can block both people and applications.
In Facebook, go to > Account > Privacy Settings and find the item called > Block Lists at the bottom of the page. Click the > Edit your lists link to proceed.
On the following page you can enter Facebook users by name and email address and block them.
If there are several people with the same name, you will see a list of matching profiles. Click the > Block button next to the person you were looking for.
2. Via Their Profile
On each Facebook user profile there is a > Report/Block this Person link at the bottom left. Click this link and a window will pop up that allows you to make a selection.
For example, you could report the person for > Unwanted contact and check the box to > Block this person. If you go with the block, the name will appear in your Block Lists, as described above.
3. Via Their Messages
If the person you wish to block has sent you any messages, you can block them by clicking the > Report link next to their name and the date the message was received. To see the link you must open the message. Once you click it, a window with further options will pop up.
Note that no one you block will be notified of the action. However, if they are on your friend list, they will be removed and your profile will not be visible to them. Likewise, you won't be able to view their profile. You both will be invisible to each other, with the exception of third party applications.
If you accidentally blocked someone, you can easily remove the block. Go to your Block Lists and click the > Unblock link next to the person's name. You will be asked to confirm. Unblocking a person will not restore a previous connection.
4. Remove Your Basic Directory Information
If you have a serious stalker, chances are they will just set up a new Facebook account once you block them. In this case you should consider making your profile private, so that strangers can not find and harass you.
The first thing you should do, is remove as much of yourself as possible from the > Basic Directory Information. Go to > Account > Privacy Settings and click on > View Settings.
On the following page you can define who can search and find you on Facebook, send friend requests or messages, see your friend list, and more. For each item choose carefully from the following options: Everyone, Friends of Friends, or Friends Only.
Unfortunately, you cannot completely hide yourself. Facebook states that "your name, profile picture, gender, and network are always open to everyone." This explains why.
5. Tighten Your Privacy Settings
Besides restricting basic directory information, you should also restrict who can see the things you are sharing. Go back to > Account > Privacy Settings and click the > Customize settings to adjust your > Sharing on Facebook options. You can also choose from a default setting.
A new page with a list of options will open. Go through all the points and decide who you want to see your posts, your personal information, or things others share with you. You can choose from Everyone, Friends of Friends, Friends Only, or Customize each point and make the information visible to only yourself or hide it from specific people.
Conclusion
It goes without saying that Facebook is just one medium through which a person can stalk you. No matter how tight your privacy settings or how trustworthy the people on your friend list are, someone determined to find and harass you still has the rest of the internet at their disposal. Be sure to treat your personal information, your contact data, and your online privacy in general like a raw egg.

Stop Cyberbullying and “Find Help” on Facebook
-----------------------
In response to increasing concerns about teenagers' safety on Facebook, SafetyWeb.com, a web-based monitoring site, has introduced a new "Find Help" application on Facebook.
The app allows users to report any violation or cyberbullying to Facebook officials while also connecting to safety and support organizations related to cyberbullying, child exploitation, suicide, depression, substance abuse and LGBT issues.
Clicking on the app brings up links for reporting incidents and useful numbers from organizations like the National Center for Missing Exploited Children's CyberTipline, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline and Facebook Abuse Reporting.
Bully victims can find it difficult to self-report incidents; this app will hopefully make it easier for them to not only report abusive behaviour but seek help and guidance at the same time. Cyberbullying is a real problem that has only recently gained mainstream attention due to a rash of teen suicides.
Social networks, despite their friend lists and updates, have also shown the dangers of cyberbullying. While social media tools like "Find Help" won't eradicate the problem, they help paint Facebook not just as the site of bullying but also as a solution to it.
Are there any privacy concerns to downloading an app like this? Is there any danger of falsely reporting abuse? Is Find Help a revolutionary app leading the charge to end cyberbullying? Let us know what you think and if you'd recommend the app in the comments below.

Merger of Christmas and Hanukkah
Happy Christma-Hanuk-Kwanza!
-JB
-----------------------
Continuing the current trend of large-scale mergers and acquisitions, it was announced today at a press conference that Christmas and Hanukkah will merge. An industry source said that the deal had been in the works for about 1300 years.
While details were not available at press time, it is believed that the overhead cost of having twelve days of Christmas and eight days of Hanukkah was becoming prohibitive for both sides. By combining forces, we''re told, the world will be able to enjoy consistently high-quality service during the Fifteen Days of Chrismukah, as the new holiday is being called.
Massive layoffs are expected, with lords a-leaping and maids a-milking being the hardest hit. As part of the conditions of the agreement, the letters on the dreydl, currently in Hebrew, will be replaced by Latin, thus becoming unintelligible to a wider audience.
Also, instead of translating to "A great miracle happened there," the message on the dreydl will be the more generic "Miraculous stuff happens." In exchange, it is believed that Jews will be allowed to use Santa Claus and his vast merchandising resources for buying and delivering their gifts.
One of the sticking points holding up the agreement for at least three hundred years was the question of whether Jewish children could leave milk and cookies for Santa even after having eaten meat for dinner. A breakthrough came last year, when Oreos were finally declared to be Kosher. All sides appeared happy about this.
A spokesman for Christmas, Inc., declined to say whether a takeover of Kwanzaa might not be in the works as well. He merely pointed out that, were it not for the independent existence of Kwanzaa, the merger between Christmas and Chanukah might indeed be seen as an unfair cornering of the holiday market. Fortunately for all concerned, he said, Kwanzaa will help to maintain the competitive balance. He then closed the press conference by leading all present in a rousing rendition of "Oy Vey, All Ye Faithful."

Amazon pulls pedophile e-book following outcry
IMHO: When you run a business, you make a lot of choices. If you decide not to carry a certain item, let's say "pink stuffed bunnies", no one actually accuses you of "pink stuffed bunny" prejudice or censorship. And if they did -- so what? You can't possibly carry everything pink, stuffed, or bunny anyway. People who want "pink stuffed bunnies" simply go elsewhere.
Amazon has not tried to take on the impossible task of carrying everything that exists in print, digital or otherwise. They pass on many things everyday. This is a matter of business or practicality, not censorship.
Deciding to carry "Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure" just down the digital bookshelf from children's ebooks is questionable.
Whether or not carrying it had anything to do with censorship or business is debatable.
As much as I hate censorship, the argument/defense gets brought out every time there is a decision someone doesn't want questioned.
Some day someone is going to make a real argument regarding censorship and no one will listen.

Opening up the parking will really help those who had to arrive extra early to find parking wherever they could get it, including surrounding neighborhoods.
Funny how even the smallest student parking area is so important. If the new structure is taken care of, it will be even more so - both for electricity and shaded parking.

3G Mobile Internet Comes to Mount Everest
To test out the new facility, Ncell also made the world's highest video call at 17,388 feet.
So far, visitors of Mount Everest had to depend on satellite phones to make calls, but now they can do so through a standard GSM, 3G-enabled network. "The coverage of the network will reach up to the peak of the Everest," Ncell Nepal chief Pasi Koistinen said to reporters in Kathmandu on Thursday.
Ncell is a joint venture between private investors and Sweden-based telecom TeliaSonera. Ncell's network currently covers less than one-third of Nepal's population, but TeliaSonera said it planned to invest $100 million in the next year to extend coverage to more than 90% of the country's population.
"This achievement is as mighty as the altitude as 3G high speed internet will bring faster, more affordable telecommunication services to the people living in the Khumbu Valley, trekkers, and climbers alike," said TeliaSonera CEO Lars Nyberg.

Dear parents, caretakers and professionals,
Well, we are in our third year and back in full swing for the 2010-2011 school year. I am looking forward to seeing all that attend the support group, either regularly or sporadically.
Big change: There is a new name, meeting place and start/end times for the support group. This should make the group more accessible to our entire community. The building is on the northwest corner of 17th and L Streets. There is free parking in the parking lot that one enters from 18th St., immediately east of K St. The parking lot is open until 7pm. Anyone parked in there prior to 7pm can exit at any time, day or night.
The group is now under the "umbrella" of the Kern Autism Network and can be found at:
No other changes have been made. The format of the meetings will be the same unless you, as participants, would like a change.
Our first meeting will have no speaker, giving everyone an opportunity to share how summer and the start of school went. I will always bring "take-away" strategies or background information to support social communication, executive functioning (organization) or sensory integration skills.

Memory : Get Organized
Having a good organizational system in place will ensure that information will not be misplaced, because if you have a specific place for everything, the mind knows exactly where to go to retrieve that information. For example, a disorganized person might throw their keys anywhere in the house. This means that they must remember at all times where their keys are, otherwise the keys become lost. If you are organized and always place your keys on the hook next to the door, then your brain doesn't need to remember where they are because they are always in the same place.
For less tangible information such as phone numbers and dates, you could use a PDA or notebook to keep track of the information. This frees up some mental energy for more creative or productive uses. Once this stuff is written down, you no longer have to expend energy keeping it in your brain.

The importance of enjoying the habit
I've written a lot about habits it's in the title, after all and after all these years, and after all the questions that people have asked about forming habits, there's one thing that seems more important than anything else.
It's simply this: enjoy the habit.
That might seem obvious to some of you, but you'd be surprised how many people try to force themselves to do things they don't enjoy. They try to instill "discipline" because they think it'll make them a better person or give them a better life, but what kind of life is it if you force yourself to do things you hate all the time?
And here's the thing: if you try to make a habit of something you don't like doing, you're almost sure to fail. I know, because I've tried it many times. If I find myself saying, "I hate this, but I can do it!" then it's an uphill battle, and one I almost always lose. Because after a week or two of doing this, you'll lose enthusiasm. You'll run out of the incredible energy required to form a new habit, and then miss the habit one day, and another day, and soon it's over.
But look at the opposite scenario you do something you love doing. Well, how hard is it to motivate yourself to do this? You look forward to it. You are excited about it. When you actually do the habit, you're happy, and your overall experience is positive. That's a habit that is much more likely to stick.
I've done dozens of experiments in creating habits in my own life, and I've helped hundreds if not thousands of others form habits, and it's a common theme when the person doesn't enjoy the new habit, it fails, and when they do, it has a high degree of success.
Sure, there are other factors how consistent you are, whether you have a trigger that's already anchored into your regular routine, whether you have social accountability, etc. But the most important factor, by far, is loving the habit.
The things we don't like
I'll acknowledge there are times we have to do things we don't like. That's a necessary part of life. But why choose such a thing to become a daily habit? If that's what you're doing, you should take a long hard look at whether it's really necessary, and if so, whether you can possibly make changes to your life so that you don't need to do this activity on such a regular basis. I've done this many times, and though the change in my life is sometimes time-consuming, the result is always worth it.
But what about kicking bad habits? Isn't that hard and unenjoyable? Sure, of course. I kicked the smoking habit (almost 5 years ago), and it was difficult. Agonizing. Fortunately, I figured out that I had to put enjoyable habits in place of the smoking, and I actually looked forward to them things like running to relieve stress, eating healthy foods, writing, stuff like that. I love those activities, and it made the whole process much easier.
How to love the habit
This how-to section will seem too obvious to some, but it seems necessary to me. How do you go about enjoying the habit? Two ways:
1. Choose a habit you already love. This is the easy way. If you love reading, or drinking tea, or journaling, or taking walks in the park, choose something like that. Want to get active? Choose a sport you love playing, or an outdoor activity that gives you joy. Want to be more productive? Choose a work activity you love doing as your first task each day.
Or:
2. Focus on the enjoyable aspects. If you don't already love the habit, learn to love it. Not by reprogramming your mind to love something you hate, but by finding things about the habit you do enjoy. For example, when I started running, it was hard. I was a recent smoker, so my lungs were crap, and my legs were weak, and I'd get tired fast. But there were things I enjoyed too getting outside, the fresh air, moving and feeling my heart beating, the beauty of nature, the good feeling after I was done. So I focused on these things, and it worked. And then eventually the running got easier and I loved everything about the activity. This kind of thing can be done with almost anything look hard for the good aspects, the things you enjoy. If you can't find anything, you've chosen the wrong habit.
In the end, discipline doesn't work. You can't use discipline to form a habit you hate, because what exactly do you do when you don't feel motivated to do the habit? You find something about it to get you going, and that's thinking about something enjoyable the enjoyable end result, for example, or an enjoyable reward, or how good you'll feel telling others you did it. There are many ways to motivate yourself with something enjoyable, but no ways to use the nebulous concept of "discipline" to do something you hate.
Love the habit, and it will stick around longer.
If you liked this guide, please bookmark it on Delicious or share on Twitter. Thanks, my friends.

Edward Teller
Memory : Only 10% of Your Brain
The origins of this myth are unknown, but it might have originated from a researcher named Karl Spencer Lashley who lived about a hundred years ago. He removed parts of the brains of rats and showed that they could still perform certain tests. The problem with these results are that the rats were only tested on tasks that required the parts of the brain that had not been removed. If the rats had been given other tests, they would have certainly failed.
Creativity : Left vs Right Brain Thinking
Unfortunately, left brained thinking is the type that is most valued by our society and taught in our schools. Almost all of the major subjects taught in school (math, science, history, etc) depend predominately on left brained thinking. Rarely do teachers encourage their students to think creatively and explore alternate solutions, and rarely are right brained studies (art, design, music, etc) encouraged.
This over emphasis becomes even more problematic as students move into the professional world. In order to get support for a new project or idea, it must be clearly defined and understood (left brained thinking) by the people who are going to be paying for it. It's very difficult to get funding for a project if the goals are not clearly understood. As a result, creative ideas don't happen as frequently as they could if right brained thinking was more valued.
It's no coincidence that the really creative ideas that occur from time to time are usually self-funded by the inventor working out of their garage. These are the people who understand the true value of thinking creatively.

5 Things You Must Check Before Disposing of Old Computers
Whatever you do, there are a few things you must check before giving away, trashing, or recycling a computer. Backing up information and securely deleting private data is one major concern. You may also be able to reuse parts or the entire computer. This article provides a quick overview of your options when it comes to disposing of old computers.
1. Backup Data
Obviously, you will want to keep a copy of your data. Here is a quick list of information you should not forget to backup:
Personal Files
Pictures, Music, Movies, anything entertaining you have on your computer, don't lose it. Same goes for any documents or files you have downloaded.
The Best FREE Backup Software for your PC
Browser Data
This includes bookmarks, saved logins & passwords, extensions, and other personal settings. It's much easier to transfer the data than to set it all up again, don't you agree?
Backup & Restore Your Internet Explorer Browser Settings
Back up your Firefox Profile with MozBackup
If you're using a desktop eMail program like Thunderbird or Outlook, do backup your profile and take your conversations and your address book with you.
5 Easy Ways To Back Up Your Microsoft Outlook Data
Archive Your Browser & Mail Settings With MailBrowserBackup
Program Data
Did you create databases, make specific settings, or save other data with any of the programs you're using? Think of calendars, bibliography tools, image editing software, games, or music playlists. Any of that information can be backed up and transferred to your new computer. Usually, these data are saved under documents & settings or in the respective program files folder. The easiest way would be to backup these two folders entirely.
Fonts
Have you downloaded and installed any additional fonts? They are likely compatible with your new computer, so save you the time of tracking them down again and just backup the fonts folder. In Windows, it's found under C:/Windows/Fonts.
Is your computer no longer booting or is the hard drive dead? Check out the following articles:
How To Back Up Data From Computer That Won't Boot
How To Get Data Off A Dead Hard Drive
2. Serial Numbers & Registration Keys
This point deserves special attention because losing a serial number or registration keys can actually cost you money. If you're not sure where you stored that information, retrieve it before it's too late:
3 Ways To Recover Serial Numbers In Windows
If you purchased software online and downloaded the installation file, rather than having it on a CD, be safe and back that up, too.
3. Wipe Private Data
If you seriously don't want to keep your hard drive or can't be bothered to remove it from your old computer, make sure all your private information is gone. Your data in the wrong hands could result in humiliation, financial loss, or worst of all: identity theft.
Neither deleting files, nor emptying the trash, or formatting your hard drive is enough! To be on the safe side, you must shred and overwrite your data. Follow the steps described in this article: How To Completely & Securely Erase Your Hard Drive [Windows]
Some great suggestions on how to delete, shred, and terminally wipe your private information are also given in the replies to this question on MakeUseOf Answers: How can I clean a laptop before donating it?
4. Strip Out Useful Parts
Basically, all parts of your computer, if still functional, may be useful for you or someone else. So think twice before you trash anything. If computer parts are alien to you, read this article first: The Basic Parts Of A Computer & How To Upgrade Them [Technology Explained]
Monitor
Keep it as a backup, set up a dual screen if your graphics card supports it, or hook it up to your laptop for a better screen.
Cables and External Devices
Keep one set of everything as a backup. Nobody wants a used mouse or keyboard anyways.
Hard Drive
Put it into a USB case and use as an external hard drive, hook up internally to your new computer, or wipe it clean before you give it away.
RAM
If your old RAM is compatible with your new computer's motherboard, you may as well use it. However, never mix different RAM modules. Read the answers to this MakeUseOf Answers questions for some leads: How can I upgrade my RAM and hard drive?
Power Supply Unit
An often searched for replacement part.
Motherboard & CPU
You won't need that with your new computer. But someone else may use it as a replacement.
CD / DVD drive
Card Reader
Floppy drive
Graphics Card
Sound Card
Try to sell the parts you can't use yourself on eBay, and give away leftovers via your local FreeCycle.
5. Re-Use Entire Computer
This may be the most important point! Maybe you can actually still use your old computer. So check out the possibilities before you submit it to the trash.
If your old computer is still running, it can serve many purposes. If it can connect to the internet, you could donate the CPU time. Your could also give it to someone who needs it or turn it into an entertainment center. These and many more ideas are summarized in my article Top 10 Cool Uses For Old Computers And Laptops. Finally, if your machine is really old, maybe the local tech museum is interested in it.
Can you think of any more uses of old computers or parts or alternatives for disposing of old computers? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

World's Stupidest Criminal Found in Canada
Stupider: Cutting in line to rob a Starbucks
Even more stupider: the people you cut are police officers.
Neatorama-worthy: IN UNIFORM!
According to police, a short time later the officers were inside the coffee shop ordering at the till when the man they had spoken with outside walked directly up to the till, threw a drink at the employee and demanded cash.
"[The officers] looked at each other in astonishment that someone would attempt that with two uniform officers in the room," Sgt. Bruce Carrie told ctvbc.ca.

2010.04.12 AHEADD and Loren John Presley
Holey Arbeit, Regional Program Director, and Sandy Poole of AHEADD, Achieving in Higher Education with Autism/Developmental Disabilities
It started along the East Coast and it has come to the west coast via Bakersfield -- a support organization for those with verbal/non-verbal language and learning disabilities to go the next step beyond the highly structured elementary and high school environment to college, career, and independent living.
Carnegie Mellon University has been described as a "mini-MIT" and has been the place where the AHEADD program came into its own.
Traditional accommodations under IEPs for students with disabilities include:
- extended time for tests (and sometimes assignments),
- technology aids,
- distraction free environment,
- preferred seating.
Non-traditional accommodations individually include:
- establishing a network of support,
- facilitating communication with professors,
- aiding in self advocacy skill development,
- social language instruction,
- regular assistance with organization (pragmatics/executive functioning),
- increased academic and personal accountability,
- regular meetings with AHEADD staff/professors to discuss progress,
- structured peer support,
- life skills education.
The west coast region already has several students in several different cities, thanks to being vendored by the Rehabilitation Department and California State Regional Centers (locally Kern Regional Center). If the KRC or Dept of Rehab client is approved for the service, these agencies can cover the tuition, which starts at $4200 per student per semester. Given the how comprehensive the services provided are, other services are a lot more expensive.
For more information about the organization on a national level, email Carolyn Komich Hare, Director of AHEADD or visit AHEADD, Achieving in Higher Education with Autism/Developmental Disabilities.
Loren John Presley, college student, author, and person with Aspergers
Loren Presley loves writing books, building robots, and (digital) animation. In a previous visit to our Parent Support Group (PSG), he told of his life journey of trying to figure out who he was and why he processed things differently than other around him seemed to. This time, he focused more on the process of the self-discovery process.
- Who are we?
- What has hurt you?
- Why did this happen to me?
- Am I worth anything?
From preschool he used his imagination, was drawn inward, and focused on inner thought. He had to find strength within himself and support outside of himself.
- Even though there are these things, you can succeed.
- Total rejection -- horror stories.
- We must learn to stop hating
- Essential needs of every human
- we all deserve them
- Hope and human heart
- quantity and/versus quality
- Love is a universal value
Diagnosed by third grade, he was aware of the feeling that he was different. The feeling shook his self esteem and self confidence. To him the diagnosis, like many who struggle with undiagnosed disbelieved problems, was actually a relief!
- He emphasizes human
- humans are important
- human equals frame
- like in robotics and animation, the human body is just a frame (for the soul)
- everything else is just an accessory
- Essential needs
- Loyal friends and a support system
- Safe, secure, understanding
Middle school and high school were like the Medieval Ages. (note-were? -jb) (reference -- Freaks, Geeks, and Aspergers.)
- Advocate Dignity
Jane Burch
The beginning of the school year is upon us.
With three kids in three different schools, these last few years have been especially hectic. Trying to make time for each and allow them the time they need for what they have to do is always a balancing act. Then there is keeping them on track and, for one kid, checking to make sure the child isn't taking the easy way out.
