Law Requires Police To Check For Illegal Immigrants. Arizona? Nope: Mexico!
We don't post a lot of politics here on Neatorama, so pardon me for this post about the new and controversial Arizona law that forced local police to check whether a person is an illegal immigrant (presumably from Mexico).
Critics contend that the law will lead to racial profiling. Even Mexican President Felipe Calderón has blasted the law as violating basic human rights.
Whether you agree with the law or not, here's the point of this post: it turns out that despite its bluster, Mexico actually has very similar laws on its book against the country's own Honduran illegal immigrants!
Mexico's Foreign Ministry said the law "violates inalienable human rights" and Democrats in Congress applauded Mexican President Felipe Calderón's criticisms of the law in a speech he gave on Capitol Hill last week.
Yet Mexico's Arizona-style law requires local police to check IDs. And Mexican police freely engage in racial profiling and routinely harass Central American migrants, say immigration activists. [...]
"There (in the United States), they'll deport you," Hector Vázquez, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, said as he rested in a makeshift camp with other migrants under a highway bridge in Tultitlán. "In Mexico they'll probably let you go, but they'll beat you up and steal everything you've got first."

Travolta Film Workshop, week 1
... burning the LED candle at both ends!
The Performing Arts Project is wrapping up its first of two weeks.
Participants are certainly putting in their time creating and producing their shorts to put together into the finished project. Their multifaceted approach to learning is applicable to many life situations. Their vocational training can be extended to many jobs. Add participant enthusiasm and staff dedication and you have a winning program!
For those who are worried about funding in these difficult times, the funding for this project was not affected by any county funding decision. It is good to know that things such as this have a better chance of continuing. For more information or to provide your feedback on this and other projects, please contact the Arts Counsel of Kern or your county supervisor.
For the kids and young adults who are participating, the 8:30am-2pm days are going fast. They are really enjoying their time in this wonderful program. There are even participants from another country to participate, observe, and maybe even recreate their own film projects at home. This summer Performing Arts Project will end June 18th. Watch for more information about the resulting film's premier!

The NBC Pipes
To fill time while they waited for an appearance on The Jack Paar Program in 1964, Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Don Sahlin and Jerry Juhl decorated some pipes in their dressing room. They left a note that said, "With love, from the Muppets." It was just a spur-of-the-moment prank, and Paar mentioned they would be painted over the next day. But the pipes remained as they were for 46 years. Read the rest of the story at Muppet Wiki. Link -via Metafilter

Topographical Crime Maps
Doug McCune, who describes himself as a "data visualization engineer", created 3D crime maps for San Francisco. They look like topographical elevation maps because raised portions represent reported criminal incidents. Pictured above is a display of prostitution in the city.
